Infiniti was founded in 1985 as a means for its parent company, Nissan, to stay fiercely competitive in the luxury markets of North America and Europe, where high-end cars, particularly those from Germany, were already well-established. Infiniti was established in Hong Kong as Infiniti Global Limited in 2012 after initially operating out of Nissan’s headquarters in Yokohama, Japan. Nissan’s premium brand is now a household name, with items sold in more than 50 nations worldwide. The firm specializes in designing and constructing upscale, expensive, sport utility vehicles influenced by high-performance automobiles.

The manufacturer “revamped” its whole portfolio in 2012 and declared a change in brand strategy, although merely in name. This required abandoning Infiniti’s customary M, G, FX, JX, and EX naming pattern, favoring Q for sedans and QX for SUVs, and better distinguishing the company’s vehicles. For instance, the TK50 evolved into the QX50.

Because the cars were virtually exclusively carryover models (i.e., exact vehicle, new badge) rather than brand-new or completely modified vehicles, the new naming practice unfortunately initially produced more confusion than it did clarify.

This is the now, not then. Eight models total, including a coupe (Q60), three sedans (Q50, Q70, and Q70L), and four SUVs (QX30, QX50, QX60, and QX80). In factories in China, Japan, and the United States, it produces its automobiles. Infiniti continues to pursue its luxury-meets-performance strategy with various engines, from turbocharged four-cylinders to powerful V8s, and with rear-wheel drive as standard on half of its model portfolio. Infiniti has also participated in premier motorsports competitions, like F1 racing, to display its technical ingenuity.
